If you could only clear one day for downtown Albany this December, which one should it be? This year the organizers have pretty much picked it for you. Saturday, December 5 has the last outdoor holiday market of the season, the Hot Chocolate Stroll, a window decorating contest, an indoor county holiday market at MVP Arena and the City of Albany tree lighting at Academy Park.
That one Saturday carries more than it used to because the rest of the calendar got shorter.
Deck the Hall-bany is the open-air market ParkAlbany and the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District run together at Clinton Market Collective and Quackenbush Square. It's back for 2026 on three Saturdays: November 21, November 28 and December 5, each from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last year it ran four: November 22 and 29, then December 6 and 13. Neither the 2026 listing nor ParkAlbany's 2025 page says why the run got shorter.
The market itself hasn't gotten smaller. The BID describes more than 60 local vendors, heated tents with heating towers at both spots, food trucks, free hot chocolate, live music, circus performers and character meet-and-greets for kids. Admission is free. The BID also says the 2025 market drew more than 1,000 visitors per event date, and it expects more this year.
Do the arithmetic and the dates get tight. In 2025 the last market fell on December 13, one week after the December 6 Hot Chocolate Stroll. In 2026 the outdoor market wraps up on December 5, the same day as the Stroll. Vendor applications close Wednesday, November 4, so the vendor list for each Saturday will fill in over the next month.
November 28 is the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That makes the middle market the one that lines up with out-of-town family, and it's also the night the Palace has a holiday show. More on that below.
The BID's own page calls the final Saturday a "make a day of" it occasion and lists everything happening downtown that day:
As of early October, some details are still missing. The BID says "more details coming soon" and hasn't posted a time for the tree lighting or hours and admission for the MVP Arena market. A NEWS10 roundup with "2026" in its title is actually from November 2025, so its tree-lighting time doesn't confirm anything for this year.
The county market is the newest piece. The BID's 2025 holiday page listed Deck the Hall-bany, Small Business Saturday and the Hot Chocolate Stroll, and didn't mention a county market at MVP Arena. In 2024, ParkAlbany ran a separate free holiday market at Kiernan Plaza in Union Station, 575 Broadway, on December 6 and 7. No organizer has called the 2026 MVP Arena event a first. What's clear is that on December 5 downtown has an outdoor market and an indoor one running the same day.
The BID hasn't posted 2026 Stroll prices, hours or participants yet. Last year's details give you a baseline. In 2025 the Stroll ran 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with tickets at $25 pre-registered and $30 at the door if any were left. The 2025 roster had 19 stops. Alias Coffee, Banh Mi 47, Castle Island Montessori, Dawn's Victory Sports Café, Downtown Nutrition, Fort Orange General Store, Higher Tolerance, Hilton Albany, Historic Albany Foundation, Loch & Quay, McGeary's Irish Pub, Motor Oil Coffee, Stacks Espresso Bar, St. Peter's Church, The City Beer Hall, The Hollow Bar + Kitchen, The Olde English Pub, The Skinny Pancake and Wellingtons all took part. For 2026, the BID promises "dozens" of businesses.
If last year's 11-to-3 window holds, the Stroll fits inside the market's 11-to-4 hours. That leaves the late afternoon open for the arena and the tree lighting.
If one packed Saturday isn't your thing, the state runs a calmer holiday market on weekdays. The Office of General Services lists its 2026 Empire State Plaza Holiday Market in the Concourse on December 1–3, December 8–10 and December 15–17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. With Thanksgiving on November 26, those are Tuesday-through-Thursday blocks. The market is indoors and runs on lunch-hour time, so it works on a workday if you're downtown anyway.
The first week overlaps with OGS's Community Holiday Sales, December 1–3, also 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Concourse. That sale is for eligible nonprofit organizations and craft vendors aged 55 or older.
Taken together, the Plaza offers nine weekdays of holiday shopping and Deck the Hall-bany offers three Saturdays. Its last week, December 15–17, also runs past the end of the outdoor market. The Plaza's state holiday tree lighting doesn't have a 2026 date yet. The Plaza's upcoming-events page jumps from November 6 straight to January 13, 2027.
The evening shows fill in around the free daytime events. Here's the calendar in order:
The Palace's Holiday Movie Series page still shows 2025 dates, so there's no 2026 series to plan around yet.
Laid out this way, the busiest weekend is November 28–29, Thanksgiving weekend. It has a market, a Palace show, an arena concert and theREP's first weekend all within two days. December 5 is the biggest single day for free events. Then the free events end while the Plaza market and The Magi keep going into late December.
For 25 seasons, the Albany Police Athletic League's Capital Holiday Lights in the Park ran a drive-through display in Washington Park. Its final season ran from November 26, 2021 through January 2, 2022. CBS6 reported that it went virtual in 2022 after the city denied a permit over traffic congestion. A planned move to the Altamont Fairgrounds in 2023 fell through because of facility challenges.
In January 2026, Albany County GOP Chairman Jim McGaughan started a petition to bring it back. PAL Executive Director Lenny Ricchiuti answered carefully:
"After several years off, updates to the show, infrastructure, and operations would be necessary. Any meaningful progress would depend on strong support from the city and swift decision-making to allow enough time to plan, update, and execute the event properly."
He also said it was "simply too soon to comment one way or another." No newer update has turned up since that January 7 report, and PAL's own website still shows the 2021 schedule. With less than two months until the season starts, nothing confirms a 2026 return.
That gap explains a lot about how the calendar looks. Lights in the Park filled six weeks of evenings and you watched from your car. Everything on this year's list is on foot, mostly in daylight and mostly in a few concentrated blocks of dates. December 5 is where the walkable events all meet.
If you're spending a long Saturday downtown, a few places have opened since last holiday season. Cafe 66 is an all-day bakery-cafe at 66 State Street, run by NeoVista Hospitality. It opened this summer, and The Dishing reviewed it in late July. Postage Stamp Ping Pong Park opened at 48 Central Avenue in April. It has public ping-pong and chess tables, and NEWS10 reported that landscaping and garden additions were planned for the months that followed. A little farther out, the Albany Business Review reported on September 29 that Brick House Pizza has reopened at 423 Quail Street.
Before December 5, check the BID's holiday page for the tree-lighting time, the MVP Arena market hours and the 2026 Stroll ticket price. As of October 4 the BID hadn't posted any of the three.
